Term of Service January, 2016 through December, 2018

President of the Congregation

The President presides at meetings of the Voters Assembly, the Church Board of Administration and the meeting of Officers.  He shall represent the Congregation in an administrative capacity from time to time at various board and committee meetings, dividing this phase of administration with the Vice President as he shall see fit.

Secretary of the Congregation

The Secretary has custody of the historical records of the Congregation and its seal.  This person shall take minutes of the meeting of the Voters Assembly, of the Church Board of Administration and of the Executive Board.  He/she shall have other duties as are customarily assigned to the Secretary such as:

Preparing the meeting date schedule for the year and the roster of various board members and officers for each calendar year;

Copy agenda and appropriate reports and paperwork for Board of Administration and Voters meetings.

The Secretary also serves on the Board of Finance.

Treasurer of the Congregation

(Term of Service is January, 2016 through December, 2017)

The Treasurer has the executive responsibility for the funds and the financial records of the Congregation.  This person has the assistance of others (Business Administrator, Assistant Treasurer, Financial Secretary, and Bookkeeper) in keeping the books of account and other duties which are under his/her supervision.  This person is the disbursing agent of the Congregation.  The Treasurer presents the monthly financial report to the Board of Administration and the quarterly report to the Voters Assembly. 

The Treasurer is also member of the Budget and Financial Planning Committee, the Salary Committee and the Board of Finance.

Financial Secretary of the Congregation

The Financial Secretary receives all money collected in church offerings and specified school funds.  He/she oversees the counting, recording to member accounts, and deposits of collected funds.  This person prints and mails the contribution statements semiannually to each member.

The Financial Secretary also serves on the Board of Finance, and attends monthly Board of Administration meetings.

Board of Elders

(Three positions)

The Board consists of ten men who meet the Biblical qualifications.  The New Testament (1Timothy 3:1-7 and Titus 1:5-9) is emphatic that only spiritually and morally qualified men can be elders.  To be considered for the Board of Elders, one must attend public worship diligently and partake of Holy Communion frequently.  One must also be supportive of the work of the congregation as God blesses our ability, and be involved in Bible study and maintain a stable family life.  Not just anyone who wants to be an elder can become one.  Only those men who meet God’s qualifications can become elders of the congregation.

Duties include:

Oversee the mission, ministry and oversight of doctrine of St. John’s Lutheran Church;

In cooperation with the Pastor, see that Article 2 of the constitution is consistently adhered to and honored;

Work with the Pastor in the spiritual care of the Congregation’s members;

Be responsible for all worship services, the musical ministry of the Congregation, care of the altar areas, the readers, acolytes, usher staff, and valet parking;

Oversee and be an advocate of the Pastor for his total well being;

Investigate all allegations of incapacity, incompetence, or impropriety indicated in Article X of the Constitution and report such to the Board of Administration;

Work with Member Mission Outreach, Youth Mission Outreach and support the coordination of other mission opportunities;

Encourage and promote spiritual, financial, and talent stewardship within the congregation;

Support involvement in Small Groups/Christ Care;

Plan and support local Evangelism events, coordinate with outside groups and support community service outreach;

Work with Hands and Feet ministry to assimilate new members;

Work with Senior Ministry, Golden Eagles and Bus Ministry.

Board of Christian Education

(Two Positions)

The Board of Education is responsible for the strategic vision and the practical running of the school, which also includes Sunday School and CEA; this board sets policy for the school and determines the school’s yearly budget. 

Duties include hiring of school staff and principal and well as determining salaries according to established guidelines.

Board members serve on various committees as needed and should attend one of the two school graduations each year.

Board of Properties

(Two Positions)

The members of the Board of Properties are to maintain and have control of all the real and physical properties of the Congregations.  They are to determine the needs of the Congregation, investigate, plan and make recommendations regarding purchases and other acquisition of property and the disposal thereof.

Duties include attending the regular board meeting each month to discuss projects and issues relating to the facilities of St. John’s Lutheran Church/School;

Participate in the regular duties of mowing the church and school grounds;

Participate in the weekend removal of snow and ice on the sidewalks of the church and school;

Participate in work days on an as-needed basis;

Follow-up and report on assigned issues from monthly meetings relating to the maintenance and operations of the church and school;

Faithful service in a fiduciary capacity and oversight of the budget and expenditures associated with this Board.

Members may also serve as a representative from their board on various church committees, such as the Salary Committee.

Other Open Positions (Appointed, not Elected)

Assistant Sunday School Superintendent

This person serves under the direction of the Sunday School Superintendent and the Board of Education.

Endowment Committee

This Committee is governed in accordance with the official by-laws of the Endowment Fund.  The purpose of the Fund is to receive gifts and bequests, and to use the investment income from them for the mission and ministry of St. John’s Lutheran Church.  Endowment Committee member duties are to promote and manage this fund.
